About New Zion Missionary Baptist Church

The New Zion Missionary Baptist Church, affectionately called, ‘The Downtown Church With the Uphome Spirit’, is centrally located between the great West and South sides of Chicago; about a mile-and-a-half west of the great lake of Michigan, and about a mile due south of the infamous United Center. We are situated within the Illinois Medical District, one of the largest health centers in the world, and a few blocks southwest of the fast growing UIC Campus.

History

On November 7, 1937, a group of baptized believers in Christ met and organized a Church, named NEW ZION MISSIONARY BAPTIST CHURCH. In 1941, the Church was chartered in Illinois, as a religious body.

The first service was held in the Wm. Ray Funeral Parlor, at 14th & Loomis. The Church moved to 1082 W. 14th, and later, to 1336 W. 14th Street. In 1947, the Church purchased a facility at 1901 West Washburne. In 1994, the Church erected a new edifice at 1252 South Wolcott Street.

The Church has enjoyed spiritual growth and prosperity under the leadership of four Pastors and one *interim Pastor:

REV. WILLIAM A. JONES, 1937 – 1947
REV. A.W. FOSTER, 1947 – 1949
*REV. LEON AUSTIN, 1949 – 1951
REV. DR. T.L. WHITE, 1951 – 1983
REV. DR.N. WORDLAW, 1983 –

To God be the glory for the things He has done!

Mission Statement

“...To give visible form to the great commission (Mat. 28: 19-20): to manifest the Christ-likeness with those in and outside the household of faith (John 13:34, 2 Tim. 3:16-17); and, to integrate new ministry paradigms that will improve holistic developments (John 14:12; Eph. 4:13-16”.
